Walgett Shire Council provides services to the towns of Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri and Burren Junction and villages including, Carinda, Cumborah, Rowena, Pokataroo and the Grawin, Glengarry, Sheepyard Opal Fields and surrounding rural areas. The Shire covers an area of 22,007 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 8,300. Walgett itself has a population of approximately 1900.
Dominant indistries include cropping, grazing, opal mining, and tourism. Walgett Shire is renowned for quality wheat, chickpeas, cotton, beef and wool.
The Barwon, Namoi, Macquarie, Castlereagh, Narran and Moonie rivers pass through the Shire and the dominant landform consists of unconsolidated alluvium with an elevation between 120 and 145 metres above sea level. In the northern part of the Shire there are a number of ridges composed of weathered sedimentary rocks that reach a maximum elevation of about 160 metres above sea level.
