Burren JunctionLast modified: January 7, 2008 - 10:49 AM
History of Burren Junction The settlement of Burren Junction came into being in 1902 as a large railway camp about a kilometre south-east of the present town, during extension of the railway line from Narrabri West towards Walgett. Residents of this early settlement were mainly itinerant railway construction workers. The name 'Burren' was probably chosen in deference to nearby Burran Station. (Settlement at Old Burren had commenced as early as 1861 on Burran Station, where there was a store and an inn.) The name' Burren' is said to be a Kamilaroi word meaning 'boomerang'. After the railway line was extended towards both Walgett and Collarenebri, the word 'Junction' was added to the settlement's name. Burren Junction was officially proclaimed a village in 1903. The formation of Burren Junction closely followed the final defeat of Boer troops in 1902 by the British Army, with the assistance of Australian Soldiers. Most streets in Burren Junction are named after British War Victories. Between 1903 and 1909 blocks of land were designated as sites for a school, police station, village hall and recreation area. The Anglican Church and Post Office were built. Town blocks were offered for sale in 1904. From 1905 there was a daily train service departing Sydney at 7:20am and arriving at Burren at 12.20pm. Bu 1910 Burren boasted a store, several agents, two black-smiths, a baker, a tailor, a coach builder and railway refreshment room. The Coronation hotel was built in 1911 on a site now occupied by the swimming pool; the Coronation was demolished after completion of the Junction City Hotel in 1989. The town of Burren Junction came into being with the advent of the railway line extension from Narrabri West in the early 1900's it was officially proclaimed a village on September 26, 1903. In its infancy Burren Junction was a railway tent town, which quickly developed into an industrious commercial centre. One of the main attractions to Burren Junction is the hot artesian bore baths which are located just out of town, and attract people from everywhere wanting a therapeutic dip.
