What to do in Lightning Ridge

 

Bore Baths - Hop in the hot baths under a starlight sky, popular at twilight. Entry is FREE. The baths are open twenty four hours a day seven days a week. Located on Ernie Sherman Way.

Walk in Mine - Self Guided Experience, open daily 9am-5pm. Phone 02 6829 0473.

Bevan's Cactus Nursery - More than 2000 species of cactus, plus the obligatory opal display. Phone 02 6829 2882 or visit www.wj.com.au/whatto

Nettleton's First Shaft - sunk by Charles Nettleton, the first European to discover opals in the area in 1902.

Lightning Ridge Visitor Information Centre - Visitors can try their luck beside the information centre, picking through a head of discarded dirt from the mines. You might think this is futile until you hear about Mary and John from the NSW South Coast who in April, found a 14.2ct opal worth $24,000. Another American tourist picked up a nobbie that rolled off a passing truck in the main street. It paid for his entire Australian holiday.Lions Park Bill O'Brien Way. Car Door Tours - Old Car doors signpost self-drive tours around opal fields next to town. A free pamphlet from the Visitor Information Centre outlines attractions.

Black Opal Tours - Three-hour tours daily at 8:30am, 9:30am and 1:30pm. Cost $25 for Adults. Full day tours for a minimum of ten people. Phone 6829 0368 or visit www.blackopaltours.com

Outback Opal Tours - Three-hour tours daily at 9am and 2pm. $25 for Adults. Full day tour on Thursdays, minimum of 8 adults. Phone 02 6829 4110 or email outbackopals.com.au

Amigo's Castle - This impressive ironstone "castle" is the work of one man. Phone 02 68294110 

Astronmers Monument - A curious folly that celebrates celestial discoveries. Phone 02 6829 2882.

Australian Opal Centre - The proposed $8 million Australian Opal Centre, designed by Architects Glen Murcutt and Wendy Lewin to house the country's premier collection of the national gemstone, may further boost the town's fortunes. Construction is expected to begin within a year.
