What to do in Carinda Gateway to the Macquarie MarshesLocated just 1/2 hour drive away from Carinda, The Macquarie Marshes offer an interesting experience of a major wetland, and home to some of the Outback's most unique wildlife. Many interesting birds have been sighted here. The Macquarie Marshes cover 200,000 hectares and support a wide range of plants and animals. The Marshes contain extensive areas of common reed, cumbungi, river red gum woodlands, coolibah woodlands and water couch grasslands. The Marshes are recognized as the major colonial waterbird nesting area in Australia and are recognised under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. The reserve is managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the remaining 90% is mainly private land managed for agricultural purposes. The Nature Reserve is mostly surrounded by private land and it is important to respect this when visiting. Visit www.macquariemarshes.com In 2000 a Wildlife Observation PLatform was built by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services on the Gibson Way at the Terrigal Creek. This site is well worth visiting in the early morning or late afternoon when a variety of wildlife is often visible. The platform contains a map of the area as well as interpretation signs. Marsh Meanders is a privatley operated tourist enterprise located in the Maquarie Marshes and offers a range of activities includingkayaking (seasonal) and walking tours. Cuddy SpringsCuddie Springs is an acient lake located between the Marra Creek and the Macquarie River, near Carinda. Animals recorded from Cuddy Springs include Giant Kangaroos and Goannas, and thousands of stone tools, bones and grinding stones have also been found. Archaeologists travel to Cuddy Springs annually to work on the site and investigate the areas prehistory. Picnic RacesCarinda hosts a race meeting every July and is fast becoming a major social event in Western NSW. Caravan and Camping facilities are available at the Race Track and nearby sports ground. Carinda Police StationCarinda's most infamous drawcard is its Police Station believed to be accidently built in the wrong town. Was it really meant for Quirindi?
