Walgett Shire Council is proud to welcome two new participants to its paid work experience program, continuing Council’s commitment to supporting local people, developing future professionals and building a workforce that reflects the diversity of our community.

For Council, “growing our own” has become an important approach to supporting long-term careers in the region. Graduate Town Planner Jonathan Mak, who began earlier this year with Council as an Administration Officer, is a strong example of how local development pathways can create real results.

Jonathan said he has appreciated the opportunities available to him at Council.

"I'm really grateful for the opportunities Walgett Shire Council has given me to progress in local government from an Administration Officer in the Planning and Compliance Department to a Graduate Town Planner with the ability to mentor two planning interns."

He said the experience has helped him build strong skills across several areas.

"During my time at Walgett Shire Council, I was able to gain invaluable experience working in a multi-disciplinary area such as town planning, and I will continue to deliver positive outcomes for the local community to the best of my ability."

Local resident Beatrice Thwaites, who recently completed her Bachelor of Environmental Science, said she is excited to begin her professional career close to home.

“I’ve lived in the Walgett Shire for more than 20 years, so being able to start my career here is really meaningful. As a new graduate, getting that first step can be challenging, so this placement is a great opportunity to learn and contribute locally.”

Council is also welcoming Somayeh Najibnia, who brings international experience and has recently completed her Bachelor of Town Planning.

“This is my first professional experience in Australia, and the team has been so warm and welcoming. I’m looking forward to learning more about the local planning system while contributing the experience I’ve gained in Iran and the UK.”

Council’s General Manager Andrew Brown said the program reflects Council’s commitment to creating real, supported pathways for new professionals.

“We want people to feel encouraged, valued and given room to grow. These placements help build skills within our region while offering people a genuine pathway into local government.”

Council is proud of its diverse and multicultural workforce, which includes people at different life stages, from different backgrounds and with varied professional experience. This diversity strengthens Council’s ability to serve the community and support those who call the Shire home.

Walgett Shire Council is an equal opportunity employer, encouraging applications from people of all backgrounds—school leavers, career changers, and those returning to the workforce.
