Important Notice:
Lorne Road is currently closed at the Fred Reece Way intersection until further notice. There is no access to the town centre via this route. However, access to Lorne Road Station and nearby properties remains available.
For real-time road closures, hazards and traffic alerts, visit Live Traffic NSW.
All road closures are listed on Council’s Facebook page when updates are available
Our road network connects with several neighbouring Shires.
For road closure updates in surrounding areas, please check the road condition reports from Moree Plains, Narrabri, Brewarrina, Balonne, and Coonamble Shire Councils.
Please note: Driving on closed roads is prohibited and may result in fines or charges for any damage caused.
Walgett’s unsealed road condition report will be updated only when conditions change.
Before You Travel
Please note: Council has no control over how road closures or diversions are displayed on Google Maps or other GPS apps. While we feed information into Live Traffic NSW, the routes shown may not always reflect the safest or most suitable option. We strongly recommend planning your trip in advance when visiting rural or remote areas—especially where unsealed roads are involved—as mobile service can be limited and alternate routes may not be reliable.
- Check Live Traffic NSW for the latest updates before heading out.
- Avoid using unsealed roads during or after rainfall.
- Do not attempt to drive through floodwaters — conditions can change quickly and hazards may be hidden.
Who Manages Our Highways? Reporting Issues on State Roads
The Kamilaroi, Castlereagh and Gwydir Highways are part of the State Road network, which is managed and maintained by Transport for NSW - not Council.
If you come across any of the following issues on these highways, please report them directly to Transport for NSW:
• Traffic accidents
• Vehicle breakdowns
• Road hazards (e.g. potholes, debris, unsafe surfaces)
• Incidents affecting traffic flow
• Condition of rest areas (e.g. bins, toilets)
To report a concern, contact the Transport for NSW Incident Reporting Line on 131 700.
This will ensure the appropriate agency is notified and able to take action.
Key Contacts
Please note: Council is unable to assist vehicles that become stuck or stranded on NSW roads. If this occurs, contact a tow service for assistance.
