The Shire is on the productive soil plains of N.S.W and traditional rural pursuits have been farming and grazing. Walgett Shire covers 22,000 square kilometres and has a population of 7199 people and includes the towns of Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Burren Junction, Collarenebri, Carinda, Cumborah, Grawin Glengarry & Sheepyard Opal Fields, Rowena and Pokataroo.
