2021 Walgett Shire Australia Day Ambassador Announced

John Kundereri Moriarty AM has been named Walgett Shire Council’s 2021 Australia Day Ambassador. John Kundereri Moriarty will be front and centre of Walgett Shire Australia Day events which are being held in Walgett this year and will be joining Walgett Shire Council Mayor Ian Woodcock in presenting the 2021 Australia Day awards.

Mayor Cr Ian Woodcock, is pleased that John has taken the time to join Walgett Shire for this celebration.

“Australia Day is such a special community day and an opportunity to showcase what’s great about the Walgett Shire. In the past year Australia has faced immense challenges – drought, bushfire, floods and the coronavirus pandemic.  We all have different stories to share about this country and Australia Day is an opportunity to remember how fortunate we are to live together here in Australia. I know that Walgett will put on a memorable day and having John here just makes it all the more special.” Ian said.

John Kundereri Moriarty AM was born at Borroloola in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory,

John’s autobiography, Saltwater Fella, was published by Penguin Books in 2000, and was Highly Commended in the Australian Human Rights Commission Literary Awards.

He is a former Chairman of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board of the Australia Council, the ATSIC Electoral Boundaries Review Committee and the National Aboriginal Sports Corporation of Australia, and a former Deputy Chair of Indigenous Business Australia. John is the recipient of the Order of Australia (AM), the St Peters Citizenship Award, and the Advance Australia Award for Service to Industry and Commerce.

He was named South Australian Aboriginal Businessman of the Year in 1992. In 2014 John was inducted into the Australian Design Hall of Fame, and in 2015 was inducted into the Football Federation of Australia Hall of Fame.

Do you know someone who has helped make Walgett Shire a better place?
Walgett Shire Council is calling on residents to make a nomination for the 2021 Australia Day Citizen Awards to recognise those who make a positive difference in the community.
Each year Council acknowledges the unsung heroes who make outstanding contributions through volunteering and individual acts of compassion, generosity, or bravery.
Whether through the arts, education, health, community welfare or acts of charity, we all know someone who deserves recognition for the hard work they do for the community.
The Walgett Shire 2021 Australia Day Awards offer a chance to recognise the local heroes who have made Walgett Shire a better place to live, and nominations are now open.
Australia Day Awards are presented in the following categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Health Award, Business Award, Student Citizenship Award, Volunteer of the Year Award & Lifetime Achievement Award
This year has been tumultuous and challenging – and communities throughout Walgett Shire have shown fortitude as it faced down the COVID-19 pandemic. So the awards will be even more special than usual.
In previous years, Walgett Shire Council has asked residents to nominate an Event of the Year. This year, COVID-19 has forced the cancellation of most events. Therefore, the Event category has been suspended this year.
Previous award winners have come from a range of diverse backgrounds and have included people taking action for a brighter future, passionate volunteers, high achieving sports people and those dedicated to promoting our unique Shire.
