Come By Chance Road Funding Approval
The Heavy Vehicle Safety & Productivity Program (HVSPP) is an Australian Government initiative to fund infrastructure projects across Australia that improves the productivity and safety outcomes of road infrastructure.
Earlier this year Walgett Shire Council made application under the HVSPP for funding to match existing approved grants for the completion of a 52klm stretch of the Come By Chance Road from Walgett to Pilliga.
Mayor Ian Woodcock OAM said “he and fellow Councillors were thrilled to hear the HVSPP grant had finally been approved, this allows for sealing of the missing link, a 52klm stretch of the Come By Chance Road to the sealed section just west of Pilliga, and the $5million HVSPP grant along with the approved Fixing Country Road and Block grants provides for a total of $12,730,000 to complete the upgrade”.
He said “Council in 2017 prepared a business case based upon a previous feasibility study for upgrading of the road, as Council recognised its importance to the broader community, and the sealing would allow for the reliable movement of agricultural products and livestock, improved road safety for motorists, and access to Walgett for residents during wet weather. This route serves a vibrant agricultural community to the east of the shire and the upgrade will also improve efficiency of farming operations, allow greater on farm investment and will no doubt encourage tourists to take another scenic route into the shire”.
Mayor Woodcock said, “Road infrastructure renewal is paramount to the success and sustainability of our local economy, and we thank both the Commonwealth and State Governments in partnering with Walgett Shire to upgrade this important road
