Passing of former Mayor & Councillor of Walgett Shire Council Mr. Alan Friend

The Walgett Shire Councillors and staff were all saddened to hear of the recent passing of Mr. Allan Friend a former Councillor, Shire President and Mayor of the Walgett Shire Council. Mr. Friend passed away on 4th February 2021.

Mayor Ian Woodcock OAM said our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends, as we send our warmest condolences to Allan’s family.

The Mayor said Mr. Friend made an amazing contribution to the Walgett Shire and its wider communities having served as a Councillor from 1968-1981, and 1999-2004. During his first term Mr. Friend served as Shire president for seven (7) years from 1974-1981, and then as Mayor from 2000-2001 and then again in 2004. Allan was also awarded a Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 for his service to Local Government.

Alan was a real achiever, a very determined man with a passion for rugby, he played an integral part in establishing the Walgett Rugby Club, and went on to play 188 games, he was the clubs highest point scorer, and awarded life membership to the club. Alan was also involved in numerous community committee’s and organisations in the shire, he made a valuable and positive contribution to our community, and he will be sadly missed, said Mayor Woodcock.
