Locals on big screen when Flickerfest & AOC bring

Australia’s hottest short films to Walgett Shire on 19 May

Flickerfest, Australia’s largest Short Film Festival, is coming to the AOC Black Opal Heritage Shed in Lightning Ridge at 7pm on Wednesday 19 May – with local talent as Ben and Peter Watt star on the big screen!

The Australian Opal Centre is excited to bring Walgett Shire the hottest shorts in the world today as part of the Flickerfest National Tour, when it screens the Best of Australian Shorts – a selection of entertaining, inspiring and award-winning films hand-picked from the festival’s 2,700 entries.

Highlights will include Dust Cloud, a film about a badly behaved working dog who changes his tune when given the love and respect he deserves by a prudent country woman played by Sandy Gore (Brides of Christ, Australia). Dust Cloud stars father and son actors Peter and Ben Watt; Peter lived and worked as an agronomist in the Walgett area for 5 years in the 80s, when he met Ben’s Mum Penny. Ben returned and spent three months in the region last year, working on his uncle’s farm and playing with the local Rugby team.

Other highlights include the fabulous Roborovski, which won the Yoram Gross Award For Best Australian Animation at Flickerfest 2021 – an animated short about an adorable miniature hamster seeking revenge, penned by Oscar nominated writer John Collee (Happy Feet); and the hilarious Glen, where our 50 something hero must come face to face with Facebook in his quest for new love.

The screening is outdoors so DRESS WARM and bring a blanket and torch. Chairs provided.

The Busy Bee Cafe will sell hot drinks, food and sweets from the Buumble Truck from 6.15pm; guests are also welcome to BYO.

Celebrating its 30th year in 2021, Flickerfest remains Australia’s leading Academy® Qualifying and BAFTA Recognised short film festival.
