Kookaburra Court Moves Forward with Councillor Support
Published on 25 June 2025
Walgett Shire Council has supported, in principle, a proposal to repurpose the former aged care facility at Kookaburra Court into a community living model for older residents capable of self-care.
Following community consultation sessions including a town hall meeting and strong public support, Council has committed to exploring a group home model that would allow elderly and infirm residents to remain in Walgett while living independently in a supported, communal environment.
Mayor Jasen Ramien said the proposal reflects the community’s deep desire to see Kookaburra Court reactivated for the benefit of residents.
“It’s a great step forward and we want the community to know that we are listening. Our locals don’t want to leave their family, friends, or the place they call home,” Clr Ramien said.
“There’s still a lot of work ahead, but this is a positive move in the right direction, and we will keep advocating for a solution that meets the needs of our Shire.”
Council has engaged Professor Rodney Jilek, an expert in gerontology and aged care models, to prepare a detailed report on the viability of the proposal and options for future operation of the site. Professor Jilek recently visited Walgett and is currently undertaking a full assessment, which will be presented to Council upon completion.
Kookaburra Court was previously operated as an aged care residence by The Whiddon Group before its closure and transfer to Council in mid-2022. Community consultation between March and June 2025 confirmed overwhelming support for an over-55s communal living model that prioritises independence while offering a sense of safety, connection and support.
The upcoming report will assess operational needs, care coordination, eligibility protocols and regulatory obligations and will provide recommendations on potential governance approaches which will include Council-led, community-run or partnership models.
Council will consider the full report later this year before making a final decision on the future of Kookaburra Court.
The full recommendation as presented to Council:
That Council:
1. Endorse, in principle, the use of the Kookaburra Court facility as a community group home model for elderly and infirm persons capable of self-care; and
2. Note that a detailed report will be presented to Council within five months, outlining management and governance options for future operation of the site.
