Proposed 40Km Zones for Walgett Town Centre

The Walgett Shire Council wishes to seek community feedback regarding the proposed introduction of a 40km per hour zone along Fox Street in the Walgett CBD.
The Council in conjunction with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and their Pedestrian Safety Program are proposing to install measures to upgrade safety in the Walgett town centre. The program targets areas with high pedestrian activity and was introduced as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to address and reduce accidents and injuries on local roads.
The introduction of a High Pedestrian Activity Area (HPAA) in the Walgett town centre will see the current speed limit reduced from 50km to 40kms per hour. There will also be traffic calming devices and signage installed to alert drivers to the lower speed limit and make them more aware of the presence of pedestrians.
The project outcomes include lower vehicle speeds, enhanced pedestrian facilities, improved pedestrian safety and amenity, a safer road environment that supports pedestrian activity and statistically proven reductions in crashes.
The proposed 40km zone footprint can be viewed on Council’s website www.walgett.nsw.gov.au and will affect traffic on Fox St, from Montkeila Street to Euroka Street including side streets of Warrena, Wee Waa and Euroka Streets.
The HPAA was initiated for the Walgett Shire in August 2020 by the Local Area Traffic Committee and was put to the Council resolution that same month. The initial proposal for a 40km HPAA in Walgett CBD was exhibited to the public on 5th of November 2020 and despite positive community feedback faced implementation delays. A revised footprint was put forward to Council in December 2022.
